In business management, the relevance of the voice is usually underestimated, but it plays a decisive role. The tone of voice is often more important than the content when it comes to whether a person is perceived as trustworthy, authentic and competent (Blagusz, 2016). This is reflected in the study "Career factor voice" by Karmasin Motivforschung (2006), in which 200 companies in Germany and Austria were surveyed. The results showed that aspects such as "credibility," "competence" and "self-confidence" are closely linked to voice. In addition, 91% of respondents stated that an appropriate voice and manner of speaking contribute to applicants being favoured.
It is therefore in the economic interest of both companies and their employees to invest in these factors, be it through seminars, training or workshops. Voice prevention in particular is becoming increasingly important, as the demands on the voice at work have risen considerably, especially due to the increased use of remote work. An outstanding vocal tone is becoming increasingly important across all industries, as products and services are becoming more interchangeable and the quality of communication is gaining in importance. This affects not only the exchange with customers and the external impact of companies, but also internal communication processes (Fischbacher, 2008).
At Coaching Change, we recognise the importance of vocal communication in a professional context and recommend taking appropriate measures to improve communication skills in order to be audibly successful in an increasingly competitive business world.
Here we have some initial tips for optimising your acoustic business card:
- Authenticity: Remain authentic and "stand by your word". Your inner attitude should be reflected in the sound of your voice. Stay true to yourself and write down 3 positive observations in connection with your voice.
- Breathing as a foundation: Breathing forms the basis for a strong and resilient voice. Make sure you take regular breaks while speaking. Sufficient breathing pauses are crucial to using your voice effectively.
- Let yourself relax: It is important to be physically relaxed too. Start with the muscles in your face, throat and especially your neck and shoulders. Regular stretching, yawning and occasional walks or a short yoga session during your lunch break can improve the permeability of your voice in your body. This not only leads to a lasting improvement in your voice, but also to an increased sense of well-being.
